The Grange Recognised Nationally for Developing Confident Communicators

The Grange Primary School has been recognised as a Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence, placing the school among just 90 schools nationally to receive the prestigious accreditation for excellence in speaking, listening and communication skills.

The award recognises The Grange’s success in helping pupils become confident speakers, thoughtful listeners and articulate learners through classroom discussion, debate and presentation opportunities across the curriculum.

Achieved following three years of strategic development led by Mrs Minton-Allen and Mrs Fearon, the accreditation highlights the school’s success in creating classrooms where pupils are encouraged to think critically, speak confidently and engage meaningfully with others.

The recognition comes at a significant time nationally, with the government recently outlining plans to strengthen the role of speaking and communication skills within the curriculum to better prepare young people for future education, employment and life beyond school.

Developing confident communication skills is now a defining strength of The Grange, supporting pupils academically, socially and personally across all year groups.

The achievement was marked during a special whole-school assembly where the official plaque was unveiled, celebrating the school’s place as a recognised leader in communication and spoken language development.

Pupils shared how these skills have strengthened their confidence and learning:

Lennon said: “During Parliament Week, we debated sustainability and spoke with MPs and Lords. My oracy skills make me braver talking to new people.”

Millie said: “Oracy helps in Maths, as asking questions improves our understanding and problem-solving.”

Freddie said: “I used to be nervous speaking in class, but now I can present confidently to the whole school.”

Leah said: “I feel much more confident. My advice is to take your time and have a go – you might surprise yourself.”

Head of School Gwyn Evans said: “This award reflects the dedication of our staff and the enthusiasm of our pupils. We believe giving children a voice is fundamental to their future success, and we are proud to be recognised nationally for the strength of our communication-focused curriculum.”
