Maths

Learning our times tables is a main focus for year four in order to prepare ourselves for the national multiplication check in June and to provide us with the skills to access other areas of maths. We begin the year by developing our multiplication and division knowledge before securing a sound understanding of place value and number. This builds upon prior knowledge and consolidates our knowledge of the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Throughout the year, we develop our knowledge in shape, space and measure as we learn how to calculate area and perimeter, we further consolidate our knowledge of time and we develop our understanding of the properties of shape. Through oracy discussions we develop our mathematical reasoning skills, mathematical vocabulary ,deepen our understanding and address common misconceptions. The curriculum is designed to develop reasoning and problem solving skills throughout all topics.

English

During our English lessons we will be reading a range of fiction, non fiction texts and poetry. English lessons are structured around the National Curriculum focusing on the core areas of speaking and listening, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Throughout our writing journey, pupils write for a range of purposes as they develop their composition skills, learn how to write coherently and master spelling , grammar and punctuation skills. They will develop their writing skills through a range of texts, with the main purpose being to inform, entertain, persuade and to discuss. Through peer and self editing, they will learn how to edit and make improvements to their ideas.

Oracy​

In Oracy, pupils will learn how to talk in full sentencess using a clear, confident voice as they develop their communication and language skills across the four oracy strands. Through the physical strand, they will learn how to soeak clearly and confidently whilst through the cognitive strand pupils will learn how to organise their thoughts before speaking. Through discussions, they will enhance their social and emotional skills, learning how to listen carefully to each other and finally through the linguistic strand they will develop a range of vocabulary.

History

In History, pupils will compare and contrast the ancient civilisations of the Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Romans. Their studies will explore common threads such as daily life and tools used within that time period.

Geography

In Geography, pupils will build upon prior knowledge locating continents as they learn about the different countries within the continent of Europe. They will compare and contrast different cities and learn about a range of geographical features exploring the human features and landscapes within a range of diverse cities. Following this they will learn about the effects of Climate Change on our planet, the important role of our oceans and conduct a range of investigations before exploring ways to reduce their own carbon footprint.

Science

In Science, pupils will develop their scientific knowledge and skills through a range of topics such as Electricity, Sound, States of Matter, Animals including Humans and Living things and their Habitats. Throughout the different topics they will investigate, conduct experiments and develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific vocabulary.

Music

In Music, pupils will continue to develop their musical vocabulary, knowledge and interrelated skills whilst learning music theory and how to play the cello. Alongside this, they will develop their musical vocabulary and learn how to apraise a piece of music using key musical language.

Art

In Art, pupils will study three artists as they explore their different styles of art and the techniques they used. They will start to learn about William Morris and his famous repeated print patterns that were made famous through his wallpaper designs. Then they will explore Leonado Davinci and study his flying sky ship designs before finally studying the techniques used by Henry Rousseau. Alongside these studies, pupils will develop their skills in the use of watercolours, sculpture and drawing.

Computing

In Computing, they will further embed E-Safety knowledge and skills before learning about networks, develop their coding skills, learn how to use data loggers and through a range of software they will enhance their digital literacy and photo editing skills.

Spanish

In Spanish, pupils will build on prior knowledge by introducing more complex sentence structures and everyday phrases. Our Spanish curriculum, builds confidence and develops understanding of key phrases and vocabulary.

RE

In RE, pupils will learn about different faiths including, Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism. Pupils develop an understanding of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs.

PSHE

Our PSHE lessons are designed to help pupils learn how to stay healthy, safe and prepared for life. We look at different topics throughout the year including Health & Well Being, Understanding Realtionships and The World Around Us.

PE

In PE, year four pupils develop skills in swimming, gymnastics, netball, dodgeball, rounders and fitness. Alongside learning key skills relating to the different sports they also develop a greater undertsanding of teamwork.

Class Four Homework

Maths – A strong focus will be learning all of our times tables up to 12 x 12 in preparation for the national test in June.

Times Tables Please ensure you are logging into TT Rockstars at least three times a week. Also spend time revising your times table facts. Use Maths Frame to practise and adjust the test to focus on the areas you need to learn.

Reading Please ensure you that you read every night and your reading record is signed and brought into school each day.

Spelling It is important to practise your spellings each night before our weekly spelling test on a Friday. Please complete the spelling sheet and remember to print the word. Practise on the opposite page using different colours, writing the word backwards, writing it in a diagonal or in rainbows or in pyramids. Spelling homework will also be set through Spelling Shed.

At the Grange we believe that it is crucial to work in partnership with parents and carers. There is an expectation that you will support us by ensuring that your child completes the tasks we set as homework.

Obviously the level of engagement will depend on your child’s age but we expect you take an active part in all aspects of homework and, where necessary, indicate that you have monitored the completion of it (e.g signing the Home/School Reading Record Book.)

The routines of reading every day, learning spellings and multiplication tables etc. can be great fun and very reading for all concerned. Best results are achieved when homework is not done at the last minute but has a fixed time in a child’s established routine. Short, sharp periods of activity are preferable to prolonged periods of study where concentration can be lost.

Effective learning and consolidation of learning cannot happen in an environment with lots of distractions (e.g. television etc.) Please give some thought to where your child works at home.
