Maths

Vision Statement

At The Grange Primary School and Nursery, we believe that mathematics is a fundamental life skill that enables children to understand and make sense of the world around them. Our vision is to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic mathematicians who enjoy challenge, think critically and can apply their mathematical knowledge and skills in a wide range of contexts.

We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their starting point, background or additional needs, experiences success in mathematics. Through high-quality teaching, carefully sequenced learning and a supportive environment, we nurture positive attitudes towards mathematics and encourage children to develop curiosity, independence and perseverance.

Mathematics at The Grange is inclusive, accessible and ambitious for all. We recognise the diverse needs of our learners, including those within our specialist SEN provision, and adapt teaching, resources and learning experiences to ensure that every child can engage with and make progress in mathematics. We strive to remove barriers to learning whilst maintaining high expectations and celebrating individual achievement.

Through our mathematics curriculum, children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, enabling them to become confident learners who are prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school. We aim for all pupils to leave The Grange with a secure understanding of mathematical concepts, the ability to think mathematically and the confidence to use mathematics effectively in everyday situations.

Rationale

At The Grange Primary School and Nursery, mathematics is a core subject that plays a vital role in children’s intellectual development and future success. We recognise that mathematical understanding underpins many aspects of everyday life and supports learning across the wider curriculum.

Our mathematics curriculum is based on the White Rose Maths framework, which we have carefully adopted and adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. The curriculum is designed to provide a coherent and progressive journey from Nursery through to Year 6, ensuring that children build secure foundations before moving on to more complex concepts. Learning is sequenced in small, manageable steps, allowing children to develop deep understanding and make meaningful connections within mathematics.

We embrace a mastery approach to teaching mathematics, where all children are given opportunities to explore concepts in depth, use mathematical language accurately, explain their thinking and solve problems in a variety of contexts. Concrete, pictorial and abstract representations are used to support understanding and enable children to develop conceptual fluency.

As an inclusive school with both mainstream and specialist SEN provision, we recognise that children learn in different ways and at different rates. Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify individual needs and adapt learning appropriately. Through scaffolding, targeted support, practical resources and carefully planned interventions, pupils are supported to access the curriculum whilst being challenged to achieve their full potential.

We place significant importance on developing children’s confidence and enjoyment in mathematics. By fostering a positive culture where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning, children develop resilience, perseverance and a growth mind-set. Opportunities to reason, investigate and apply mathematics in real-life situations help pupils understand the relevance and value of mathematics beyond the classroom.

Our intent is that all children at The Grange become fluent mathematicians who can reason mathematically, solve problems effectively and approach mathematical challenges with confidence. Through our curriculum, we equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to succeed in their future education and everyday lives.
