Our Reading Events

At The Grange, we believe that reading should be exciting, inspiring and enjoyed by everyone. Throughout the year, we celebrate books, authors, poetry and storytelling through a wide range of engaging reading events and activities across the school. From themed celebration days and poetry performances to book fairs, storytelling sessions and author studies, our children are encouraged to develop a lifelong love of reading in creative and meaningful ways. These events help bring reading to life, promote discussion and oracy, and create memorable experiences that children can share with their classmates, teachers and families.

Upcoming Reading Events

Pyjamarama!

This special day is organised by BookTrust. The children will spend the day reading, enjoying, and sharing stories all in the comfort of their pyjamas. Some classes will explore Julia Donaldson’s Zog series as a celebration theme, while others will use the FIFA World Cup as a stimulus for reading activities.

All children will take part in a rich, engaging reading experience designed to inspire a love of books. The children will be able to come to school in their pyjamas for a donation of £1. The Grange Story Writer of the Year

It will soon be our annual story writing competition. This competition has run for many years and has had a range of themes and countless fabulous entries.

The competition opens in June. More details will be added soon.

Recent Reading Events

Poem in Your Pocket Day, April

Poem in Your Pocket Day was a true celebration of poetry with every class writing, performing or reading a poem and then sharing it with another class within the school.

Older children wrote poems and kept them in their pocket to share with other children throughout the day.

Shakespeare Day, 23 April

In April, we celebrated the talented William Shakespeare and his work.

Classes explored some of his unique phrases, memorable characters and timeless stories through a range of engaging activities across the school.

Oracy featured heavily throughout the day, with pupils developing their speaking, listening and performance skills through discussion, drama and storytelling activities.

The day provided an exciting opportunity to bring literature to life and build pupils’ confidence in expressing their ideas aloud.

World Book Day, 5 March

Our World Book Day was an amazing event. Every class read ‘The Day the Banana Went Bad’ by Michelle Robinson.  The book was read and discussed then a range of engaging activities took place incorporating many different curriculum areas.

Many children dressed up as their favourite book character whilst others came in their pyjamas ready for a bedtime story. It was a day filled with reading, discussion and fun!

Book Fairs

Scholastic book fairs at The Grange Primary School proved highly successful, offering pupils and families access to a wide range of high-quality books while helping to raise valuable funds for the school’s library and reading resources.

A huge thank you to the Reading Ambassadors who helped run the events, and to all parents, carers and pupils who joined us and supported the fairs. The events also reinforced the school’s continued focus on developing a strong reading culture and encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

National Story Telling Week, February

We celebrate National Storytelling Week each year and, once again, pupils thoroughly enjoyed the wide range of activities that took place across the school.

Class 5 particularly enjoyed creating their own stories and sharing them with one another during their Oracy lesson, developing confidence, creativity and speaking skills.

Class 1 also had a wonderful time during their storytelling session, where they shared books, listened to stories and explored different characters and themes together.

Throughout the week, pupils were encouraged to use their imagination, develop their vocabulary and build a love of reading and storytelling in a fun and engaging way.

National Reading Day, January

This special day marked the launch of the 2026 Year of Reading and formed part of National Reading Day celebrations in January. Classes explored reading through a range of activities, focusing on authors or individual texts to inspire discussion and engagement. The day concluded with a whole-school interactive assembly, where pupils shared their work and ideas, strengthening oracy skills across the school community.

Michael Rosen Day, November

In November, we celebrated the author Michael Rosen. Pupils explored his work in depth, focusing on his distinctive style, humour and storytelling techniques across a range of his poems and books.

Many classes enjoyed watching recordings of Michael Rosen performing his own poetry, bringing his writing to life in an engaging and memorable way.

Class Nine particularly enjoyed the day, taking part in activities inspired by his work and demonstrating great enthusiasm for his poetry.

The day helped to deepen pupils’ appreciation of performance poetry and develop confidence in reading and reciting aloud.

National Poetry Day, October

Everyone enjoyed National Poetry Day in October. Every class, listened to, read and created poems. Some children shared poems in assembly. Children talked about which poems they preferred and why.

National Comic Book Day, September

The day began with a special assembly and the children learnt about the history of comic books. In class, the children explored a range of graphic novels and comic strips: some read them as a class, others on pairs and some independently. The children talked about their favourite comic strips and characters within them. Many classes even created their own comic strips.
