Spring Term Learning

English

This term we will be continuing to develop our reading, writing and spelling skills through the Read Write Inc phonics scheme. We will also read and study 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers and some twisty traditional tales.

Through these texts we will learn about verb tenses, adverbs, apostrophes for contraction and possession and recap the use of capital letters for proper nouns.  We will plan and write poems, stories and character descriptions.

Mathematics

Our maths work this term will focus on learning how to multiply and divide using apparatus, the multiplication tables and written methods. We will also learn about basic fractions, statistics and 2D and  3D shapes. We will continue to practise addition and subtraction skills through daily arithmetic tasks

Geography

We will begin this term by completing our topic 'Where In The World Are We?'. We will learn about the Arctic and Antarctic - its climate and what lives and grows there.

History

In Spring 2 we will complete our 'Rule Britannia' topic. The children will learn about the royal family and the life of King Charles III. We will look at some of the King's homes and castles.

Art/DT

Our DT project is free standing structures and we will use this knowledge to make a castle. During the term we will also learn about the artist, Antony Gormley and his piece of modern sculpture 'Another Place' located at Crosby Beach. We will create a piece of 3D art using clay.

Science

We are learning about materials this term. The children will learn to identify, name and compare everyday materials. They learn about the suitability of many materials and investigate how some solid materials can be changed.

PE

This term, weather permitting, our outdoor PE will be developing their sending and receiving skills including throwing and catching, rolling, kicking, tracking and stopping a ball. They will also use equipment to send and receive a ball.

The term will begin with indoor gymnastics. In this unit the children learn, explore and develop basic gymnastic actions on the floor and using apparatus. They develop gymnastic skills of jumping, rolling, balancing and travelling individually and in combination to create short sequences and movement phrases. They learn to work safely with and around others and whilst using apparatus. The children are given opportunities to provide feedback to others and recognise elements of high quality performance.

Computing

The children will focus on coding this term. They will learn how to give simple instructions, learn directions and explore simple logo using 2Go. They will also get up to speed on how to handle concepts like selection, variables and repetition using visual blocks. They will learn how to construct code by combining events, objects and actions to make things happen in their program.

RE

This term the children will learn about Easter and Pesach (Passover). They will begin to understand the significance of these celebrations to believers, focusing on story, symbol and particular celebrations.

PSHE

Our Spring topics are 'Staying Safe and Healthy' and 'Special People in Our Communities.'

Music

In Spring 1 our topic is 'I wanna play in a band' in which the children will learn about rock music. In Spring 2 the unit is 'Zootime' when the children will learn about reggae music.

Homework

Spelling - New weekly spellings are given out every Monday. The children can use the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method to practise spelling the words. The children will have a weekly spelling test on a Friday.

Reading - Reading must be completed each night and we ask that parents fill in pages read etc in the Reading Record Books so staff can see that children have read at home and if they are ready to have their books changed.

At the Grange we believe that it is crucial to work in partnership with parents and carers. There is an expectation that you will support us by ensuring that your child completes the tasks that we set as homework.

Obviously the level of your engagement will depend on your child's age but we expect you take an active part in all aspects of homework and, where necessary, indicate that you have monitored the completion of it ( e.g. by signing the Home/School Reading Record Book)

The routines of reading every day, learning spellings and multiplication tables etc. can be great fun and very rewarding for all concerned. Best results are achieved when homework is not done at the last minute but has a fixed time in a child's established home routine. Short, sharp periods of activity are preferable to prolonged periods of study where concentration can be lost.

Effective learning and consolidation of learning cannot happen in an environment with lots of distractions (e.g. television etc.)  Please give some thought to where your child works at home.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Class Two team.
