Your teaching team this year will be:

Teacher - Miss Higgins

Teaching Assistant - Miss Furlong

Summer Term Learning

During this term, we will cover two ‘topics’. We will revisit our local area topic ‘Liverpool’ and answer our key enquiry question ‘What role did Liverpool play in the Atlantic slave trade?’ We will delve back into the geography of Liverpool and what made it a key location for trade whilst examining what the Transatlantic slave trade was? Then we will look at the long lasting impact this had on Liverpool as a city and who was the main instigator for bringing an end to the slave trade in our local city.

In Summer 2, we will return to our ‘My region and North America’ topic where we will learn about the water cycle, rivers and mountains in the North America region whilst comparing them to geographical features in our own region. We will learn about the different climates and biomes that exist in our world and create our very own ‘Biome in a Box’ displaying our knowledge in a very fun and practical way.

English

We will using the novel 'Holes' by Louis Sachar to drive our reading and writing opportunities this term. Children will use their knowledge they have learnt about the characters to complete 'Point, evidence, explain' tasks which are important in the context of reading. Over the course of the final term we will complete four writing outcomes using our knowledge of the Year 5 grammar and punctuation curriculum including: a diary entry from the viewpoint of Stanley Yelnats; a persuasive leaflet to send children to Comp Green Lake; a narrative integrating description (encountering a yellow-spotted lizard); and finally a non-chronological report about a yellow spotted lizard.

There will also be the opportunity to watch the film adaptation of the book and compare the similarities and differences between the novel and the film.

Maths

Class Five’s learning in Maths in the Summer term will feature learning about angles including measuring and drawing them; converting between different forms of metric measurement and solving problems using this knowledge; measuring and calculating the perimeter and area of composite rectilinear shapes; solving problems presented in line graphs and timetables; identify the position of a shape through reflection or translation; and estimate volume and capacity by using water and different containers.

Science

In Summer 1 we will be learning about ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’ which will cover: the 7 life processes that all living things undertake; how mammals reproduce; how plants reproduce; describe the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects and birds. We will then plan and record a ‘documentary’ explaining the similarities and differences between these life cycles.

PE

This term, children will take part in some additional Yoga sessions on a Tuesday afternoon for which they will need their indoor P.E. kit (red Grange t-shirt and black shorts). Every Thursday morning, there will be a Fire Champions session led by local emergency services which will include many aspects of physical activity.

Computing

In Summer 1, children will complete a module called ‘Vector Drawing’ where they will learn to use different drawing tools to help them create images. Learners will recognise that images in vector drawings are created using shapes and lines. They will layer their objects and begin grouping and duplicating them to make more complex pieces of work.

In Summer 2, children will create ‘Flat-file databases’ which can be used to organise data in records. They will use tools within a database to order and answer questions about data. Then they will create graphs and charts from their data to help solve problems. They will use a real-life database to answer a question and present their work to others.

Music

Children will continue their musicianship of learning to play the violin by a specialised tutor. They will consolidate their use of accurate music vocabulary whilst appraising many pieces of music from the ABRSM 100 list.

Art

In Art, children will be focusing on Chromatic art skills through the use of portraits. We will begin by examining the seven elements of art and how they can be combined to produce different pieces of artwork. Our artist study will be George Seurat whose famous Pointillism works are created using dots of colour rather than strokes. We will evaluate some of his work and practise his technique.

RE

In Summer 1 our question will be “What is the best way for a Sikh to show commitment to God?”

In Summer 2 our question will be “What is the best way for a Christian to show commitment to God?”

PSHCE

Our first unit will be ‘Coping with Change’ including puberty, puberty and emotions and emotional changes.

Our second unit will be ‘Families and committed relationships’ including health, committed relationships, values of healthy relationships and diversity of relationships.

Spanish

Children will still continue their learning of the foreign language 'Spanish'. They will work on creating longer and more accurate pieces of spoken and written Spanish using the connectives y (and) and pero.

Homework

Class 5 homework

Homework in Class 5 is checked daily. We appreciate the support as parents/carers you give your child to motivate them to complete their homework but we are also encouraging the children to take greater responsibility themselves as we prepare them for high school.

Spelling - Children will be given spellings on a Friday to which they will have a week to practise them before their test the following Friday. We will be using the 'Look, cover, say, write, check' sheets but children can also access their weekly spellings on Spelling Shed (see link below) and complete other spelling activities that they will be shown in class. We will have a spelling lesson on a Monday where we will go over important rules for their spellings.

Reading - We ask that children read each night that they are in school (ideally to an adult) and that reading records are signed.

Times Tables - As the children's multiplication and division knowledge is absolutely crucial to many aspects of the Y5 Maths curriculum, we still encourage the children to log onto TT Rockstars at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 10 minutes.

At the Grange we believe that it is crucial to work in partnership with parents and carers. There is an expectation that you will support us by ensuring that your child completes the tasks we set as homework.

Obviously the level of engagement will depend on your child's age but we expect you take an active part in all aspects of homework and, where necessary, indicate that you have monitored the completion of it (e.g signing the Home/School Reading Record Book.) The routines of reading every day, learning spellings and multiplication tables etc. can be great fun and very reading for all concerned. best results are achieved when homework is not done at the last minute but has a fixed time in a child's established routine. Short, sharp periods of activity are preferable to prolonged periods of study where concentration can be lost.

Effective learning and consolidation of learning cannot happen in an environment with lots of distractions (e.g. television etc.) Please give some thought to where your child works at home.

Here you will find helpful educational resources to help with your child's learning at home.
