Class Two Curriculum
Our geography and history based topics this year are :
Where In The World Are We?
Rule Britannia
Out Of This World
English
This year we will be continuing to develop our reading, writing and spelling skills through the Read Write Inc phonics scheme. We will also read and study various story books including The Great Explorer and Look Up! as well as non-fiction texts about The Great Fire of London and space exploration.
Through these texts we will learn about verb tenses, adverbs, apostrophes for contraction and possession and recap the use of capital letters for proper nouns. We will plan and write poems, stories, character descriptions and reports.
Mathematics
Our maths work this year will focus on learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide 2-digit numbers up to 99 using apparatus, written methods and multiplication facts. We will also learn about the various units needed to measure, basic fractions, statistics, telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes, calculating money and 2D and 3D shapes. We will practise our developing number skills through regular arithmetic tasks
Geography
Through our topic ‘Where In The World Are We?’, we will learn about Liverpool, Australia, the Arctic and Antarctic and the equator.
History
In the autumn and spring terms we will complete our ‘Rule Britannia’ topic. The children will learn about The Great Fire of London, the royal family and the life of King Charles III. We will look at some of the King’s homes and castles.
Art/DT
Our DT projects are:
- Designing and making soup for a polar exploration.
- Free standing structures and we will use this knowledge to make a castle.
- Wheels and axles and we will use this knowledge to make a moving space vehicle.
Science
In Year 2 the children learn about how humans change as they grow, animal habitats, materials and plants.
PE
We have 2 sessions for PE. An outdoor lesson on Monday afternoon and an indoor lesson on Tuesday afternoon. We try to accommodate both sessions but the outdoor lesson is always weather permitting and this becomes less likely in the autumn and winter. PE kit is a red T-shirt, black shorts and black pumps.
Autumn term PE focuses on fitness and fundamentals, ball skills and dance.
Spring term PE focuses on developing games skills – sending and receiving a ball, invasion and target games.
Summer term PE is gymnastics, athletics and net and wall games.
Computing
In Class Two, the children will use a laptop to learn about information technology and how computers follow a set of instructions. They will work through a variety of coding programmes and use a computer to make music and organise data.
RE
This year the children will learn about 3 different religions.
Christianity – friendship and forgiveness
Judaism – precious objects and old testament stories
Buddhism – Budda
PSHE
We learn through 6 topics which are ‘Happy, Healthy Friendships’, ‘Our Similarities and Differences’, ‘Staying Safe and Healthy’, ‘Special People in Our Communities’, ‘When I Am Older’ and ‘Different Families’.
Music
Through a variety of music genres, the children will develop their knowledge and understanding of music vocabulary. They will learn to play the glockenspiels and begin to understand basic music notation through composition.
Homework
Spelling – New weekly spellings are given out every Monday. The children can use the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method to practise spelling the words. The children will have a weekly spelling test on a Friday.
Reading – Reading must be completed each night and we ask that parents fill in pages read etc in the Reading Record Books so staff can see that children have read at home and if they are ready to have their books changed.
At the Grange we believe that it is crucial to work in partnership with parents and carers. There is an expectation that you will support us by ensuring that your child completes the tasks that we set as homework.
Obviously the level of your engagement will depend on your child’s age but we expect you take an active part in all aspects of homework and, where necessary, indicate that you have monitored the completion of it ( e.g. by signing the Home/School Reading Record Book)
The routines of reading every day, learning spellings and multiplication tables etc. can be great fun and very rewarding for all concerned. Best results are achieved when homework is not done at the last minute but has a fixed time in a child’s established home routine. Short, sharp periods of activity are preferable to prolonged periods of study where concentration can be lost.
Effective learning and consolidation of learning cannot happen in an environment with lots of distractions (e.g. television etc.) Please give some thought to where your child works at home.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Class Two team.
