Welcome to Class Three! This year is such an exciting step as the children move into Key Stage 2 and start to take more responsibility for their own learning. Our classroom will be a place where curiosity is encouraged, mistakes are celebrated as part of learning, and everyone is supported to do their best.

In English, we’ll be diving into a wide range of books to build our love of reading and to spark ideas for our own writing. We’ll explore stories, poems, and information texts, learning how to use new vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar in our work. There will be lots of chances for the children to write creatively, as well as practising spelling and handwriting. Speaking and listening will also be a big focus, whether that’s through drama, sharing ideas in class, or presenting their own work.

In Maths, we’ll be building confidence with numbers up to 1,000, working on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Times tables will be a key focus this year – especially the 3s, 4s, and 8s – and we’ll keep practising in fun and engaging ways. We’ll also look at fractions, shape, measuring, and collecting data. Most importantly, we’ll be learning how to use maths to solve problems and explain our thinking.

In Science, the children will be exploring the world around them through hands-on investigations and experiments. We’ll be learning about rocks and soils, plants, light, forces and magnets, and animals (including humans). The children will become little scientists – asking questions, making predictions, and finding out what happens when they test their ideas.

Alongside our core subjects, we’ll be enjoying a broad and creative curriculum. In history and geography, we’ll travel back in time and around the world to discover fascinating people and places. In art and design, the children will experiment with different materials and techniques, while in design technology they’ll plan, build, and evaluate their own creations. Computing will help us become confident and safe digital citizens, and in PE, the children will stay active and develop their skills through a range of sports and activities. We’ll also enjoy making music, working on teamwork, and learning how to look after ourselves and each other.

Year Three is all about growing in confidence, developing independence, and enjoying learning together. We can’t wait to see all the amazing things the children will achieve this year!

PE – The children will take part in a PE lesson on a Thursday and a Friday. It is essential that children have the correct PE kit in order to take part. This includes:

A red top

Black shorts

Black pumps or trainers.

Swimming – In Class Three the children will go swimming during the Spring Term (when we come back after Christmas). Is it essential that all the children have the correct kit in order to be able to swim. All jewellery must be removed at home, including earrings.

Kit required for boys:

Swimming trunks (not baggy shorts)

Cap

Towel

Kit required for girls:

One piece swimming costume (no bikinis or tankinis)

Children are allowed to wear goggles during their swimming lesson.

Homework

Spelling homework will be given out to the children every Friday. The homework will have spellings that the children will be tested on the following Friday. It is expected that the children bring in their spelling homework every day to be checked.

Reading homework should be done, ideally 10-15 minutes at a minimum each night and the child’s reading record should be signed. This will be checked daily in school.
