In Spring term we will continue to learn about Brazil and Maya Civilisation.

In Mathematics we will be securing our understanding of the number system whilst tackling difficult problems to solve. We will also be extending sequences and creating formulae to solve different linear sequences. During our Shape and Measures lessons, we will be converting different units of measure and solving problems involving a range of measurements. We will be developing greater understanding of how to apply these mathematical skills in word problems.

In English, we will be looking at the poem: The Highway Man. From our study of this poem, we will be writing setting descriptions, character descriptions and letters.  In the second half of the term, we will be reading a new book called 'Orphans of the Tide' and creating descriptive writing based on the novel. We will also be improving our comprehension skills and expanding our grammatical terminology through reading various classical and contemporary texts. We will be applying our grammatical understanding in our own written pieces including stories, letters, reports and poems.

In Geography, we will continue to learn about Brazil. We will be studying Brazil’s location and concentrating on its key physical and human characteristics as well as its environmental regions and major cities.

In History, we will be learning all about the Mayan Civilisation and compare it with the Anglo Saxon Civilisation. We will use a range of historical resources to discover how this civilisation lived. We will develop our chronological understanding as we study this period.

In PSHE we will be focusing on the topic 'Caring and Responsibility'. We will look at how we can behave responsibly as we get older.

In RE we will be studying Christianity and Humanism. We will be comparing them and trying to answer the question: What matters most to Christians and to Humanists?

In Computing we will be studying the topics ‘Online Bullying’ and ‘More Complex Variables’.

We will be continuing to learn Spanish each week. We will be learning new vocabulary and learning how to start saying basic sentences in Spanish!

This term we have gymnastics on a Thursday. They will require their indoor PE kit every lesson. Outdoor PE will be on Tuesdays. The children will need an outdoor PE kit: trainers, a tracksuit and a red Grange PE t-shirt.

The KS2 National Tests (SATs) will be taking place from Monday 12th May 2025 to Thursday 15th May 2025. Children will be assessed on their Maths, Reading, Grammar and Spelling knowledge. Please ensure your child is in school for this important week and the weeks leading up to them.

Homework

Reading - Everyday. Reading records to be signed by a parent/guardian. The children will also be  expected to complete a short task after they have read each night; the task will ensure they reflect on what has been read.

Spellings - New spellings are given out every Monday and the spelling test will be the following Monday.

Times Tables - Children are asked to spend 15 minutes on TTRockstars three times a week or they are given a paper copy to practice their times tables if required.

Additional weekly homework – From time to time, the children will recieve an additional piece of homework. This homework will support the skills being tested in the SATs.

At The Grange we believe that it is crucial to work in partnership with parents and carers. There is an expectation that you will support us by ensuring that your child completes the tasks that we set as homework.

Obviously the level of your engagement will depend on your child’s age but we expect you to take an active part in all aspects of homework and, where necessary, indicate that you have monitored the completion of it (e.g. by signing the Home/School Reading Record Book.)

The routines of reading every day, learning spellings and multiplication tables etc. can be great fun and very rewarding for all concerned. Best results are achieved when homework is not done at the last minute but has a fixed time in a child’s established home routine. Short, sharp periods of activity are preferable to prolonged periods of study where concentration can be lost.

Effective learning and consolidation of learning cannot happen in an environment with lots of distractions (e.g. television etc.) Please give some thought to where your child works at home.

Please see below the extensive list of websites that your child can visit to consolidate and extend his/her learning.

Thank you in anticipation for your support during this busy school year!

If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the Class Six Team.
