We hope you had a lovely Easter break and are ready for the last term of Reception!

 

Summer 1 Term Learning

Our topic this half term is 'The World Around Us'. This includes Our Senses, How My Body Works, Superheroes, Habitats and Under the Sea.

 

Maths

In Maths we will be exploring more complex repeating patterns, 3D shapes, building and identifying numbers to 20, positional language, telling mathematical stories using first, then and now and solving subtraction problems.

 

Phonics

Phonics lessons begin on Monday 28th April.  Children will be reviewing all single set 1 sounds including special friends: sh, th, ch, qu, ng and nk. We will also be hoping to move onto set 2 sounds, beginning with the sounds ay, ee, igh, ow and oo.

 

Literacy

This half term the children will be learning to recognise and read the red tricky words , of, no, my, he, the and for. We will also be encouraging children to write simple sentences independently, usng the strategies taught such as Fred talk and Fred fingers.  

 

Communication & Language

Children will be retelling the story of Rumble in the Jungle, linking events in a story to their own experiences and learning vocabulary linked to our topic: habitat, mammal, environment, senses and organs. 

 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children will be learning how to identify and name their emotions, use our calm corner appropriately, express their opinion and understand that it is ok to hold a different view to their friends. We will also be learning why we need to have a good sleep routine and how it impacts our health and development.

 

Physical Development

PE lessons will now take place each Monday afternoon. Our first lesson will be Monday 28th April. Children will be supported to learn how to do a forward roll safely, develop their balance and co-ordination skills and form the letters w, z, x, q, ch, sh, qu, th, ng and nk.

 

Understanding the World

We will be developing the childrens' understanding of the 'present' being now, learning who Florence Nightingale is and why she is important, understand that we can only grow certain fruits and vegetables in England, name the four seasons and the typical weather associated with them and how to care for a plant.
